Legal Character
The ‘Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta’ (LUMSA) arose out of the transformation of the previous University Institute which had been established by the RD of 26 October 1939, n. 1760, and subsequent modifications. The studies that are carried out at LUMSA, and the qualifications that are conferred by it, are given official legal value on a level with the corresponding qualifications conferred by state universities.
LUMSA has autonomy at the level of teaching, administration, organisation and self-regulation within the parameters established by law.Control by the state of LUMSA is carried out by the Ministry for Education, Universities and Research.

The Aims of LUMSA as an Institution

The aims of LUMSA are:

  • To contribute to the development of scientific research and the development of studies.
  • To prepare young people for an informed and knowledgeable integration into the world of work, with special emphasis on teaching, joining public administrations, institutional activities, and the free professions, ensuring that theoretical instruction is accompanied by suitable technical-practical knowledge.
  • To foster qualified cultural, scientific and technical education based upon a humanistic conception of contemporary life.
  • To promote the overall education of the person in conformity with the Christian principles of the Catholic tradition.

COMPANIES

Over five-hundred companies and organisations have agreements with LUMSA for activities connected with internships and traineeships. Amongst the various categories on this list are to be found: press agencies, daily newspapers of national interest, companies of primary importance, public agencies, socio-health care structures and many other bodies belonging to the private sector. Thus there are many opportunities to engage in practical activities that are extremely helpful from the training point of view, not only at a professional level but also in human terms, something that LUMSA always envisages as an integral part of its study courses. A study on the careers of our graduates demonstrates that two out of three young people go on to work in the organisation or company where they have engaged in an internship.
